Abandoned as a child, Raju (Rajesh Khanna) grows up in a temple and becomes a devout follower of Lord Krishna. Raju leaves for Mumbai after he is falsely accused of stealing in the temple. In the City Raju struggles to hold to his faith but with hard work he goes from being a fruit vendor to a wealthy businessman. Raju marries Savitri (Sharmila Tagore) but their married life becomes troubled due to their different beliefs with Savitri being an atheist and Raju, a God-fearing person. Soon a child is born to them but unfortunately, the child is paralytic. Both Raju and Savitri decide to placate God by visiting various places of worship and make their child better. Can God's grace save the child?
