Shanker (Mithun Chakraborty) belongs to a poor family, and is living with his brother Ashok (Sumeet Saigal) and his mother in a village. Shanker works as a woodcutter to fulfill the needs of his family and wants his brother to study and become a big man, so he sends him to a college in Mumbai to complete his studies. Shanker meets Rani (Meenakshi Sheshadri), who comes from a missle class family background and they both fall in love. Shanker finds an admirer in Anita Chaurasia (Mandakini), who is a daughter of a multimillionaire industrialist and politician Rai Bahadur Arjun Chaurasia (Kader Khan). Shanker finds out about Arjun's illegal work done and decides to expose him. While Arjun gets to know about Shanker's plan about exposing him, he hires a gangster named Dhaga (Danny Denzongpa) to get him killed. Will Shanker be able to expose Arjun to the people in the village? Will Dhaga be able to succeed in killing Shanker?
