Vishwam played by Naseeruddin Shah is the youngest son of the powerful, and influential village Zamindar (Amrish Puri). Vishwam is married to Rukmani (Smita Patil). Then the village gets a new schoolmaster (Girish Karnad), who has a wife, Sushilla (Shabana Azmi). Vishwam is spellbound by her beauty. Noticing this, his brothers come one night and kidnap Sushila for all to see, including her husband who tries to stop them but fails. Will he be able to save his wife?
